Today I'd like to introduce you to John. John is
a client of mine and he won't mind me saying
when we started to work together he was in
the 'Rubbish Manager' bucket along with 50%
of all the managers in the world.
He had been fired twice, his confidence was at
an all-time low and his first question to me was
'What am I doing wrong?"
WOW, what a question.
I thought 'well, at least you have the right frame
of mind because you are asking for advice and
open to suggestion and improvement'.
I told John that.
The biggest problem John had was, he thought
to be a good Manager he had to be dictatorial.
Wrong!
There are lots and lots of Mangers who rule
through fear. They bully their staff into
completing things. The bully methods may
work for the very short-term but eventually
staff members just leave or move on or go
off work with stress. The bully Manager
never wins in the end.
I remember working for a bully Manager.
He would publicly shout at you, tear up your
report and demand things to be completed
without any consideration.
He once said to me: "You have to get the
plan complete by tomorrow, I have promised
the Director he will have the plan on his desk
by 8am"
"That's impossible"
"Not if you work all night. Just do it, see you
in the morning"
I completed the plan. I do have one motto,
which is 'keep your boss happy'.
But I did tell him never ask me to do such a
task again unless he was willing to stay all
night and help as well.
That Manager 'killed' a number of careers
before he was forced out of the company.
What sort of manager do you prefer - freedom
versus micro-management, constructive feedback
versus threats, creative inputs towards your career
versus tantrums on targets, support for you in front
of his bosses versus kicking you in front of everyone.
So, John and I are working together on the
understanding that one of the key traits of
a Manager is 'respect'. As a Manager, once
you have gained respect you get so much
more done through others.
Mary Baker, IT Project Manager said....
"I found your report and emails highly motivating
and I am probably the most conservative person
in the world! It does inspire you.
I will be utilising the tools you suggest for
self-assessment. It is great to get this
recommendation because I would not know
where to begin".
