(GM) adsdsf, I Am Successful Because

Hi adsdsf

Here's a question from Jonathan:

"I subscribe to countless websites on management
and careers. Yours is one of the few that I actually
bother to read more often than not.  I have some
of your products already. What I want to ask you
is this.  I go to numerous seminars and get exposed
to heaps of sales pitches to join mentoring programs.
They all say that to speed up your results, you need
a mentor.  I have always been self - motivated, a
real self starter.  Is it essential?

They all claim that to be successful you have
to have a mentor.

While I don't necessarily disagree with this, I reckon
that you can be "mentored" through reading many
books, ebooks etc and then once you have the
foundations and you wants to crank out better
results, you can get a mentor.

Another thing, I find that what someone else says
works for them may not work for everybody else,
so I feel you still need to find what works for you,
as I think being taught too much can lead to info
overload and confusion. Interested in your thoughts."

Regards,

Jonathan

That's an excellent question, Jonathan!

Yes. I believe you need a mentor to be successful.
But there are a number of ways a good mentor will
help you accomplish this
. But first consider this...

We've all been mentored by somebody, somewhere
along the way.
When you think about it, you were
mentored by your parents... colleagues, friends,
or business associates.

The question really is: Are you being mentored by
someone who has "been there and done that?"

And sure, you can go it alone and by yourself. Certainly
you can do that. But I am a huge proponent of mentoring.

I can flatly state that I would NOT be where I am today
without having had a mentor
. No question.

Let's take a simple example. Playing golf.

Yes. You can learn the basics and other things from
books, or videos. And then you can go out and,
hopefully, hit a golf ball. You can make some putts
on the green, etc.

But obviously learning from a mentor would
speed-up your learning process
. And you
would benefit from your mentors actual experiences
playing golf. Little tips, tricks, and nuances you most
likely would NOT get from a book.

Also... having a mentor is not just for knowledge, or
learning more...

The best mentor will motivate you, inspire you,
and hold you accountable.

And in my mind, those are bigger benefits than just
getting knowledge. Bigger than anything else.

That's just like some of my own mentoring clients.
Quite a few of them make MORE money than me!

Sounds crazy? It's true.

But here's why they hire me to help them.

It's not for more knowledge. And it's not so much about
getting advice from me, either.

It's about action. They're paying me to hold them
accountable. They're paying me to be their cheerleader.

And they're also paying me to be a sounding board for
their ideas.

So that's the way I look at having a mentor.

Yes, absolutely... you can do it on your own. But like I
said, a good mentor will just speed-up the process.
Why would you want to reinvent the wheel? Quite often
that happens when you do it on your own.

You said... when you have a foundation, then you can
produce better results. My take on that is, yes and no.
Yes... and no.

When you have a mentor you'll have a foundation that
much faster. And you also won't suffer from so much
information overload
... which is a very real issue, anymore.
There's just SO much knowledge and information out there.
Lots of it is good stuff.

So that's my take on that.

You know... lots of people say this to me:

"I don't need a mentor. I can do it on my own."

My reply is always... "Then why haven't you?" Very
simple. "Why haven't you, and how is it working for you,
so far?"

Take a look at your results. Simple. Take an honest look
at your results. If your results are not where you want to
be, then why not give a mentor a try?

But don't just get sucked into all those mentoring programs
out there. Take your time and find someone you like. Think
about it. You'll be paying this person, and you'll be
spending time with this person.

Find someone you like, respect, and who has been there
and done it.

Good luck!

Andrew

P.S. Don't fight with your mentor
